Conditional request from the artist

The Artist 'Amber Rubarth' agreed to my group using her song for our music video, however, she had a few requests.

"If you can also include the writing and publishing credits below, that would be appreciated.

Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help, all the best.

Thanks,

My group been asked by the artist 'Amber Rubarth' to include credits that shows the writer, Artist and the company it came from. This reassures the company that their song would not be used for commercial use.

Getting permission from the artist

On the 25/06/13 I received and email from the artist 'Amber Rubarth', giving my group permission to use her song in our music video.

Music Video analysis

In lesson today, we were set a task to choose a couple of music videos to analyse. 25/06/2013

Coldplay ft Rihanna - Princess of china

There is also a movie called 'Princess of china', which has a big amount of martial arts in it, this was very well incorporated into this music video as the artists were dressed in ancient Chinese battle attire and were demonstrating some martial arts. This music video was guaranteed a primary audience as people who saw the movie would was to see the music video. Seeing two artist that are from two completely different musical background collaborate would b very interesting to the audience; Rihanna is of an R&B background whilst Coldplay is of the pop background.

Madonna - Vogue

In reality, Madonna is a mediocre artist, however, she is very well known and successful through her excellent music videos. This is because her music videos are very contemporary  and up to date with current affairs, in this case, 'Vogue' was a type of dance that was done back when this music video was released, in this way the music video was guaranteed a primary audience. There is an inter-textual link in this music video as Madonna's make-up and hair was identical to style of Mariyln Monroe, as this makes a reference to another great artist, it allows the audience to relate to the music video.

Beyonce - Halo

The lighting of this music video supports the lyrics of the song. As whenever Beyonce says "Halo" a harsh ray of light appears behind Beyonce, this interprets that an angel is present. The mise-en-scene of this music video was well thought out as when the man is this video was watching over Beyonce in a high angle shot/ over the shoulder shot, he was wearing white whilst Beyonce was wearing black. This translates that the man is her angel and is watching over her, however, this could also be thought as patriarchal as the man looks like he has control over the woman and the lyrics conveys that the woman needs the man in order to be happy. The slow pace of the editing is parallel with the mood of the song which is relaxing.

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing compares 2U

This music video has a simplistic theme as there weren't a lot of props used, the subtle use of black and white portrays a relaxing atmosphere. The majority of the shots that were used are close ups of her face, which is striking as she has got a unique look, therefore contributed to the success of the music video. The slow pace editing of this music video is parallel to the mood of the song, which conveys that the mood of the song is sad and depressing. Sinead O'Connor gave an emotional performance, this made the music video ground breaking which also contributed to the success of the music video.

Non-copyright music

                      Copyright and Non-copyright music

Copyright refers to the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.

The importance of copyright music

For a new song or other work, copyright begins at the moment of fixation — when the music and lyrics have been set down on paper, recorded, or stored on a computer. Copyright protects the musician even if the song is never registered with the Copyright Office. Mailing a copy of the work to yourself provides no additional legal protection and is unlikely to prove useful evidence for establishing the date a song was written.
The copyright in the composition is distinct from the copyright in the sound recording. Generally speaking, the sound recording can be thought of as the master — the recorded performance of the composition. When registering a newly published song, the musician should be sure to protect the copyright in the composition separately from the copyright in the sound recording.

The problems and issues it might create for me during my project

If I don’t have the right or permission to use the work on your site, I may be infringing someone’s copyright.  And I may get a demand for damages or I may get sued. Therefore, we need to gain acceptance of a song by a non-copyright artist.

My favourite music video

Beyonce - Countdown

I like this particular music video mainly because of its editing.  Critics clasified "Countdown" as a multi-genre song and praised the sampling of the countdown from "Uhh Ahh" by Boyz II Men. They compared it to singles from Dangerously in Love(2003) and B'Day (2006), noticing elements of funk music, and dancehall influences in the tradition of "Get Me Bodied" (2007). "Countdown" features a marching rhythm and contains an Afrobeat heavy brass riff. All these genres feature an upbeat sound track which was supported by the fast pace and multi frame editing, which helped convey the mood of the sonng, which is; happy and cheerful
The lip synching was succesfully executed, and the addition of the musical intruments such as the trumpet were also incorperated very well in the music video, which supports the pace of the editing.

Artist: Beyonce
Genre: Funk music, R&b, Dancehall, Afrobeat
Popularity: "Countdown" received minor rotation on radio that attributed to its debut at number 75 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, where it peaked at number 12. It also charted at number 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. "Countdown" peaked at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart and number nine on the UK R&B Chart.

The Brief

            The Brief

Our task is to make a music promo video, our video has a limit of up to 5 minutes. I will be working on my own for my coursework.
I will also produce a 'digipak' (six panels) for its release on CD and a magazine advertisement for the digipak. In addition, to my promo video, i will have to produce a critical evaluation.
