Digipak and Magazine Advert

                    Musicians similar to my artist

These are the digipaks that would be similar to mine as their genre is similar to mine.

This is a very simple image on the front of the cover of the artist on the album. This makes the album seem quite classy, which could attract a wider audience, ranging from the younger generation to the older generation. It also suggests that even the tough the genre of the album is Pop there is also some ballad tracks on it.

A Sans Serif font, which appears t be like paint brush strokes , has been used on the disk label, which establishes the album name, ad makes it clear to the audience what CD this is. The '21' has been printed in an extremely large font, which, again makes it easier to identify the album.

Similar to the front cover, a simple portrait photograph has been used on the back cover. This is not usually seen a lot simpler and only includes the track list. So this is an unconventional feature o this album. This may have been done so the audience will know what album and artists it is immediately.

The cover of this Digipak suggests seduction which connotes that the genre of the songs are going to be pop. On the other hand, it also conveys that song could be about relationship and heartbreaks- which suggests that some of the songs could be ballads.

Digipak and Magazine Advert

                                   What is a Digipak

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside.

Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot"rather than a full plastic tray.

What goes on a digipak?

  • Name of artist and album
  • Track list
  • Barcode and record company logo
  • Six panel
  • Spine - Name of artist and album
  • Disk impression
  • An image of the band on the inside

What to look for?

  • Name of artist and album - font, size, colour, position
  • Name of album - font, size, colour, position
  • Images - size, layout, colour, content

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking ball

“Wrecking Ball" is a song performed by American recording artist Miley Cyrus for her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It was released on August 25, 2013, by RCA Records as the second single from the record. It was written by MoZella, Stephan Moccio, Sacha Skarbek, Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke), and Henry Russell Walter (Cirkut). It was produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut. "Wrecking Ball" is a pop ballad which lyrically discusses the deterioration of a relationship; it has been widely speculated to have been inspired by Cyrus' former fiancĂ© Liam Hemsworth.

I personally feel that his video was successful because of the nudity which caused a lot of controversy. The clip received generally mixed review from critics, who were divided in their opinions regarding Cyrus' increasingly provocative image. Writing for Billboard, Jason Lipshutz stated that the "nude Cyrus shown straddling a swinging wrecking ball" was the most surprising piece of the clip. Amelia Proud from Daily Mail provided a mixed review, commenting that Cyrus delivered a visual that was more provocative than its "boisterous" predecessor "We Can't Stop" and questioned if she "finally gone too far this time". The staff from Entertainment Weekly joked that viewers would be "scandalized/titillated/disappointed in Billy Ray Cyrus' parenting skills" after seeing his daughter nude and "fellating a sledgehammer." Writing for The Guardian, Michael Hann criticized Cyrus' attempts to distance herself from her Hannah Montana image, saying that "what's startling about Cyrus' journey is the extent of the embrace" and panning her for "exploring the iconography of porn

Miley Cyrus - We can't stop

"We Can't Stop" is a song by American recording artist Miley Cyrus, taken from her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It was released on June 3, 2013 by RCA Records as the lead single from the album. The song was written and produced by Mike Will Made It, P-Nasty, and Rock City, with additional song writing provided by Cyrus, Doug E. Fresh, and Slick Rick. "We Can't Stop" is a pop, R&B, and dance song that talks of a house party and recreational drug use. It was later revealed by Perez Hilton that the idea behind the song was provided by Eminem.

I personally think this music video was successful for the amount of controversy it stirred up. "We Can't Stop" received mixed reviews from music critics, who appreciated its overall production and originality, but were ambivalent towards its lyrical content. Adam Carlson of Entertainment Weekly provided a favorable review, writing that the lyrics were questionable but "infectious", adding that it reminded him of "Kesha on Benadryl. Sam Lansky from Idolator noted that stands apart from other songs recently played on mainstream radio, adding that it "just feels strange, and kind of wonderful", while Los Angeles Times' Mikael Woods labeled it "the calmest, most clear-eyed rebel yell since Janet Jackson's "Control. Sean Daly of Tampa Bay Times and Wall Street Journal staff both appreciated the catchy melody, while Lyndsey Parker fromYahoo! Music felt that "We Can't Stop" acted as a sequel to Cyrus' earlier single "Party in the U.S.A.", with the difference that "she's just partying a little harder now."

Will.I.AM ft Brittney Spears - Scream and Shout

"Scream & Shout" is a song by American recording artist will.i.am and Britney Spears, taken from the former's fourth studio album #willpower. It was released on November 20, 2012 by Interscope Records as the second single from the album, and sent to mainstream radio in the United States on November 27. The song was written by will.i.am, Jef Martens and Jean Baptiste and was produced by Martens under the alias Lazy Jay, with additional production by will.i.am. "Scream & Shout" is an upbeat dance-pop song; its lyrics are about having a good time on a night out. It interpolates a sample of the lyric "Britney, bitch", which was used on Spears' 2007 single "Gimme More".

I personally think this music video was successful because of the collaboration between the two artists. After confirming he was working with Spears on August 2012, will.i.am tweeted her saying "OMG...your lookin fit & hot...can't wait to shoot the video to our song...your fans are ganna love it...". The music video was directed by Ben Mor and filmed on October 13 – 14, 2012, in Los Angeles.  Behind the scenes footage of the video recording—in which according to the Daily Mirror Spears wore a Herve Leger dress and black gloves—was leaked on October 14. When asked about the video's concept and style, will.i.am said that it will include "urban fresh fashion", and that he intended to release the video and song together.

The song premiered on September 26, 2012, during the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and was digitally released the following day as the lead single from Unapologetic. Def Jam Recordings serviced the single to contemporary hit radio in the United States on October 2. "Diamonds" is a mid-tempo electronic and pop ballad performed with heavy synthesizers, orchestral sounds, and electronic rhythms. The song's lyrics serve as a departure from the themes of unhealthy relationships that were on Rihanna's previous singles.

I personally think this music video was successful because of the song. "Diamonds" was well received by most critics, some of whom complimented Rihanna's different musical direction, while others criticized the song's production. The single topped music charts in over twenty countries, including the United States, where it became Rihanna's twelfth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and tied her with Madonna and The Supremes for the fifth-most number one singles in the chart's history. "Diamonds" was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold over four million digital copies in the US. By May 2013, it had sold over 7.5 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all-time.

"Just Give Me a Reason" is a song written and recorded by American recording artist and songwriter Pink featuring Fun's lead singer Nate Ruess. The song was chosen as the third single from Pink's sixth studio album, The Truth About Love (2012)."Just Give Me a Reason" is a pop ballad written by both artists and produced by Jeff Bhasker. It starts off with a simple melody played on the piano, as Pink starts to sing the first verse and chorus, the latter of which introduces drum machines and bass.

I personally think this song was music video was successful because of the song. The song became a big success in the United States, and is the most successful seller from The Truth About Love so far. It topped the iTunes chart on March 19 and remained atop the list for more than 10 consecutive days, therefore becoming Pink's third Digital Songs number one hit. In early April, it fell to the runner-up position to Bruno Mars's "When I Was Your Man" only to return to the top two days later and stayed there for the entire month of April 2013. Its success in the digital market was reflected on its Hot 100 position, making it Pink's fourteenth Top 10 hit in the USA during the charting week ending March 30, 2013, then pushing it further to the top to #5 and then to #3, and finally to the top of the chart.

Robin Thicke ft TI, Pharell - Blurred lines

"Blurred Lines" is a song recorded by American recording artist Robin Thicke for his 2013 album of the same name. The song features guest vocals from American rapper T.I. and American singer and producer Pharrell Williams; all three share writing credits on the song, while production was done by Pharrell. The song was released as the lead single from the album on March 26, 2013 through Star Trak Recordings.
The single peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as topping the Billboard R&B Songs chart. It has also become Thicke's most successful song on the Billboard Hot 100, being his first to reach number one on the chart (he previously peaked at number 14 in 2007 with "Lost Without U").

I personally think this music video was successful because of the amout of controversy it raised. Critics such as Tricia Romano of The Daily Beast suggested that the song and the music video trivialize sexual consent. She charges that many female fans were uncomfortable with both the song and the video. Her article quoted many critics who interpreted the song's message as being promotion of rape culture because the title "Blurred Lines" and portions of the lyrics like "I know you want it" encourage the idea "no doesn't always mean no" and that some women who are raped are asking for it. Criticism was also levelled at the song's video, which has been labelled "eye-poppingly misogynist". The song was banned from use at student events at the University of Edinburgh, students' association officials stating the song violates its policy against "rape culture and lad banter" and promotes an unhealthy attitude towards sex and consent. It was also banned at Plymouth University, Leeds University Union, University of Derby, Queen Mary University of London, Kingston University, University of Bolton, Queen's University Belfast, University of Birmingham, the University of West Scotland and a number of Oxford colleges.

Rihanna ft Mikky Ekko - Stay

"Stay" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, from her seventh studio album, Unapologetic (2012). It features guest vocals by Mikky Ekko, and was released as the second single from the album on January 7, 2013. "Stay" was co-written by Ekko and Justin Parker. It is a pop ballad, featuring piano and guitar chords. The song's lyrical content regards the temptation and failure of resisting a true love. "Stay" garnered a mostly positive response from music critics, who were divided in their opinion regarding the balladry, with most describing it as a standout track on the album, while a few labelled it as boring. However, critics were unified in their opinion of praising the vocal performance and emotion.

I personally feel that the music video was successful because of Rihanna’s status in the music industry and her performance in the music video. "Stay" received mostly positive reviews from music critics. Jon Dolan for Rolling Stone was complimentary of Rihanna's execution of the song, writing that she performs it "within an inch of its life" and "pleads at the piano ” Dolan continued to state that it is "stark" and "shadowy" which is "confrontationally honest." Dan Martin for NME described "Stay" as Unapologetic's highlight, writing that it is a "gorgeous piano ballad." Martin continued to write that the song "puts a vulnerable spin on the Brown situation, repeating another theme of the album", a reference to her relationship with Chris Brown. Smokey Fontaine for the Huffington Post also praised "Stay", placing emphasis on Rihanna's vocal performance. He wrote that "Three years ago, no one would have paid attention to a beautiful piano-ballad like 'Stay.' Not because of the events we all witnessed, but because of how honest and emotionally-connected her vocals are.

Naughty Boy ft Sam Smith - Lalala

"La La La" is a single released by British producer Naughty Boy, featuring vocals from Sam Smith. It was released on 18 May 2013 as the second single from Naughty Boy's debut album, Hotel Cabana (2013). The track reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and, at its time of release, was confirmed by the Official Charts Company as the fastest selling single of 2013 in the UK, the Czech Republic and Italy. By the end of 2013, "La La La" was the sixth fastest-selling single of the year in the UK, selling 145,000 copies in the first week.

I personally think this music video was a success purely for the video. According to Ian Pons Jewell, the music video, which hints at The Wizard of Oz, is about an "aural" Bolivian legend dating to the early 20th century, which concerns a deaf boy who fled from his abusive home and found a stray dog that accompanied him since then. After living on the streets for an undefined amount of time he discovers that he has special talent of perceiving people's troubles, which he can heal by screaming, which is said to be as loud as an earthquake and a tornado. One day, he finds an old man who is being stoned by villagers while being taunted and ridiculed. By screaming, the boy resolves the situation and revives the old man's heart (in the video, by buying him a new heart). Together, they meet a disfigured man who was abused, considered a leper by society. The disfigured man reveals that he is a prophet who was cursed by a demon (El Tio) because he didn't worship him anymore, and abandoned the society where the demon resided. El Tio is considered as the lord of the underworld, to whom mortal people offer gifts in exchange for protection, or to ease his anger. The prophet said anybody who could hear the demon would fall under his control. He told them the demon could be found in desert, where there once was a town in which people worshipped the demon and he cursed them to kill themselves. Together they go to the place where the demon should reside. They arrive at a mine where the demon is supposed to be, but everybody with their hearing intact could be cursed by the demon, thus the boy had to face the demon alone and out-voice him with his scream to stop him from cursing others.
The video ends with an open end, considering that El Tio is the lord of the underworld who rules in the mines, which were of use for people for a prolonged period of time, whom miners sacrifice allama from time to time to avoid from being cursed, the boy could be seen as a big sacrifice to redeem the miners from El Tio's undesirable influence.

Target audience- Focus group- Findings

Target audience; Focus group- Findings

This is what I found out in the focus group feedback:

  • 100% of the focus group liked my music video
  • 50% of the focus group felt that the story I conveyed in my music suited really well with lyrics and the pace of the song.
  • A response that stood out to me and was very eye opening was "The cross cutting between the scenes of the couple- it shows the difference between the happy side of the relationship and the sad times of it" This is something I could consider writing about in my evaluation.
  • 50% of my audience felt that the audio could be smoother, this is there is a technical glitch that had occurred so it needs rendering. This would be done when I have finished editing my music video.
  • 100% of my focus group thought the concept of the home video effect worked really well and was parallel to the music. One of the response reading "Yes, because it shows the reality of everyday concepts of the relationships at their best environment."
This focus group research really helped me get an insight on how others view my music video. The thing that I learnt through this process is that somethings that I personally believe works really might not come across as good to other people. As a result, I adapted my music video to suite my target audience.

I put together 8 people that made up my focus group, I showed them my music video and the handed them a questionnaire.

I decided to have my focus group in the middle of my editing process because I thought it would great to have feedback from an audience to confirm I am on the right track. In addition, I would be able to fix an amend any suggestions given to me by my focus group before it is too late.

One Direction - Kiss you

Music video by One Direction performing, Kiss You. 2013- Simco Limited under exclusive licence to Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited.  It was released as the record's second single in Germany and the third overall single on February 8, 2013. The song was composed by Kristoffer Fogelmark, Kristian Lundin, Albin Nedler, Savan Kotecha, Shellback and its producers, Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub. "Kiss You" is an upbeat power pop song withelectronic effects; the lyrics detail a protagonist's infatuation with a significant other. Critics praised the song for its production, calling it a stand-out track on Take Me Home.
Personally, I feel this video was successful because of the artists and the video itself. The clip depicts the band shooting various scenes via a green screen, which include sequences reminiscent of iconic music videos of songs such as the Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl", Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" and Rammstein’s "Mein Land".  One the other hand, in the words of Richard Dyer who believes that stars are manufactured to make money for their record labels by appealing to target audiences. For example: boy bands such as one Direction are made to appeal to the younger audience, which makes them more successful.
